Why do people ask for opinions of complete strangers, then get offended by honest replies?

I never mean to offend people intentionally, but it would appear some of my answers were not deemed 'correct' and have been harshly criticized. I doubt I would be so honest if my friends or family asked me personal questions, but on here we have the ability to be completely honest surely? Is it just me or do other people get irritated by this too?
