Samsung DVD Camcorder- How to get my recordings to work on my laptop?

Whenever I insert the dvd into the laptop my files will play just fine on WMP. But, when I open windows live movie maker (to edit) the files won't play..it plays like a picture slideshow, not playing the actual video clips. Anyone know why this is? It worked fine on my old laptop, since having the new laptop I've had no luck.
