Why are we, the U.S., trying to put a label on the "alleged" Armenian genocide?

What possible reason would we want to p the resolution, that Turkey committed genocide in WWI against the Armenians? Why now? With all thats going on right now with the Kurds and Turkey, what can we possibly hope to gain from this?
